Cultural Values

Edo Names, Art, and Proverbs

The Edo people's cultural values abound in every aspect of life. First among them are the names they bear. Most Edo names are 'statements' that are indicative of the situation of life at the time the individual was born. Most names are therefore short forms of the real meaning. Our program shall pay attention to the spelling of the native names and the explanations of their meanings. Also, the forum shall provide a database of Edo names, from where Edo families can research and find names for their newborn babies.

Edo Poetry

Ancient and modern works of poetry in Edo language shall be a frequent and delightful program entertainment on this forum. Most of these works shall be played and replayed on DVD recordings for people to access.

Edo Adages

This forum shall revive the Edo quality value of speaking in 'Adages.' The African rhetoric is known and admired for the in-depth use of parables and adages that imply the lessons of life that are not taught in classrooms. The generations that are equipped with adages, parables, and pity-sayings is a generation endowed with wisdom. The words of our fathers are words of wisdom, and from them, we can draw applications in times of need.

Lineage Greetings

There are 74 lineage greetings in Edo Culture. This forum shall help Edo people in Diaspora to identify their various lineage greetings. The meanings of each lineage greeting and their traditional chants shall be explained in forum sessions.

Rites Of Passage

Life is filled with epochs that are celebrated by the congregation of the entire community. At different levels of family, neighborhood quarters to clans and lineages, community people are summoned together to share the joys and blessings of life or the grief of mortality. In African culture, these epochs are known and celebrated as the rites of passage. As these epochs come and pass, our people want to be reminded of their importance and the proper modes of their observance and celebrations. Among the Rites of Passage in the Edo culture are: Conception, Birth, Circumcision, Naming Ceremony (Izomo), Puberty, Marriage, Death, and Funeral.

Edo History

History is very important to the Edo people. The Edo Shepherds Forum shall provide lectures on the Great Edo Kingdom, which shall include but not limited to providing the lists of the primeval "ad infinitum primogenitura" of the Monarchical Dynasties of Edo people. The Edo people, in the motherland or in Diaspora will then be in full knowledge of their ruling Kings, present or past.
